Meal and Rest Breaks

California employers must provide their employees with a 10-minute rest break for every four hours worked and an additional break for each six hours of work thereafter. Some employers make it difficult for their employees to take rest breaks.

Employees are entitled to a 30-minute uninterrupted lunch break, free of any employer control, on shifts lasting more than five and a half hours. A shift lasting more than 10 hours entitles employees to a second off-duty meal break.
